The City of London, Ontario has provided the Facility Accessibility Design Standards for use in creating spaces that are accessible to people with disabilities. Sterling Frazer Associates recommends the use of the FADS as one of the most comprehensive tools currently available for the built environment.
At present, there is no legislation in Canada that requires a business or organization to pro-actively rennovate existing spaces to become accessible. At the time of rennovation or new construction local building codes will apply which include criteria for accessible design. These regulations can be enhanced by including design characteristics listed in the FADS.
Sterling Frazer Associates is available to assist with designing accessible spaces.
Please note, that it is not possible to create public spaces that will meet the needs of every person with a disability. While the FADS provide a high level of accessibility, there will still be some individuals who need additional accomodation. Knowledgeable staff can go a long way to overcoming physical barriers if they are prepared and know how to interact with people with disabilities.
